Crosswords – Chapter 1

“My newspaper!” Ankit shouted.
“Take that yourself. It’s on the table in the drawing room.” Priyanka replied.
“Aree I’m busy yar!” Ankit said.
Priyanka came to the bedroom with the newspaper only to see Ankit sipping his coffee while scrolling down his insta feed.
“That’s how busy you are na!” Priyanka said as she threw the newspaper to him.
“Hey! careful man!” Ankit said, “My coffee will spill here.”
“You’ll get beaten for that too.”
“That’s not done man! You’re throwing the newspaper na.”
“Yeah! That’s how you are paid off for the work you are doing right now.”
“What am I doing?”
“Exactly! Nothing.” Priyanka said and left the room.
“Acha, sorry! Please take this cup with you na.” Ankit said as he took the last sip from the cup.
Priyanka took two steps backward and looked at Ankit.
“I’ll wash the cups myself. You don’t worry.” Ankit said.
Priyanka smiled and went away.
Ankit and Priyanka were married for 3 years then, and things were going happily between them. They were both working in the same IT Company and in the same shift now.

“Priyanka!” Ankit cried.
“Yeah. What now?” She said as she entered the room.
“Priyanka yar you know that I always solve these crossword puzzles by myself.”
“Yeah I know. So?”
“So what? Why are you solving these?”
“Why would I? I’ve a good vocabulary. I don’t do such things.”
“Yeah I know you’re too good. But let me solve these na.”
“Then solve no. I am not stopping you.”
“You’re. You solved one word today too.”
“What?”
“Yeah. Yesterday also you did it. But I ignored. And today too.”
“What? Ankit I don’t do such things you know.”
“Then who else is there in the house dude? Who solved these?”
“Whoever did that, I don’t know. It just wasn’t me! Now don’t make this an issue.”
“I am making an issue?”
“Yes you are!”
“No, you made it an issue. Simply apologize for the mistake and say you won’t repeat it. This would end!”
“I won’t apologize for something I haven’t done.”
“God! Please forgive this woman! She keeps on repeating mistakes. I request you, please forgive her.”
“Fuck off Ankit.” Priyanka said and left.
Ankit laughed and started solving the puzzle.

“Priyanka! You solved the puzzle again man! Why are you doing it?” Ankit said.
“I didn’t Ankit.”
“Then who is doing it?”
“I don’t know.”
“The newspaper guy?”
“Seriously Ankit?”
“Yeah. Why not?”
“You think he know English?”
“Umm..”
“Solve the rest of the words na!”
“Yeah. I’m doing that. But who must be this guy who is intriguing?”
“Intriguing? What are you saying Ankit.”
“Yeah. This might be to annoy or disturb me. I can sense intrigue!”
“Dude you’re seriously out of your mind!” Priyanka said and left the room.
“Hey listen na. I am serious yar!”

“State Bank robbed.” News flash read on the TV screen.
Ankit was sitting on the sofa in front of the TV, taking sip of his coffee and smiling as the anchor was reading the news.
“The State Bank Central Delhi branch was robbed yesterday. All the cash was taken and lockers are found empty. The cctv system of the bank was hacked and all the cctvs were switched off. The robbery was done very cleverly and technologically and no visible evidence is found yet.”
Priyanka came to the room and sat down on the sofa too. Tension was clearly visible on her face. She looked at Ankit with the tensed face, sweat was visible on her forehead and her throat went dry.
Ankit said, “Don’t worry sweetheart. Everything will go as planned.”
